Getting Started

This page gets you in-game fast: switch to Build 42 Unstable, join the server, grab Discord, and fix common issues without summoning an admin at 03:00.
Timezone: Iceland is GMT / UTC year-round.

0) REQUIRED — Switch to Build 42 Unstable (Steam)

Steady Grounds runs on Build 42 Unstable.
If you’re on the default version, you’ll usually not see the server, or you’ll get version mismatch when joining.
  1. Open Steam → Library
  2. Right-click Project Zomboid → Properties
  3. Click Betas
  4. Under Beta Participation, select:
    unstable - public beta branch
  5. Wait for Steam to download the update
  6. Launch the game and confirm the main menu shows Build 42
👉 If Steam doesn’t update / you don’t see “unstable”
  • 1Close Project Zomboid completely (make sure it’s not running).
  • 2Restart Steam.
  • 3Right-click the game → Properties → Betas → select unstable again.
  • 4Right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity.

Still stuck? Your Steam download region or cache can be cursed. See the “Mods stuck / downloads stuck” section below.

👉 Common error: “Version mismatch”

This almost always means you are not on the same branch as the server. Go back to Steam → Betas → select unstable - public beta branch, let it update, then try again.

1) Join the server

  1. Open Project Zomboid → Multiplayer
  2. Click Join → Add Server
  3. Paste the IP and Port above
  4. Save → select it from your list → Join
👉 I can’t see the server in the list
  • 1Confirm you’re on Build 42 Unstable (Steam Betas).
  • 2Use Add Server with the IP/Port above (Direct Connect).
  • 3Restart Steam and try again.
If you get kicked while connecting, a restart may be happening. Check the restart timer on Command Center.

2) Mods

Mods auto-download when you join. Accept the prompt and let it finish.
First join can take a few minutes. That’s normal.

🧰 If mods are stuck / downloads are stuck (do these in order)
  • 1Wait 2–3 minutes. Steam Workshop sometimes looks frozen but is still working.
  • 2Close Project Zomboid completely.
  • 3Restart Steam (Steam → Exit, then open again).
  • 4Try joining the server again (it should resume downloads).
  • 5Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache (Steam will restart).
  • 6Right-click Project Zomboid → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity.
  • 7If it still fails: change Steam Download Region (Settings → Downloads) and try again.

If you’re still stuck after step 7, post in Discord with a screenshot of your Steam Downloads page + your exact error text.

👉 Crash on join after an update?
  • 1Verify game files in Steam.
  • 2Restart Steam.
  • 3Try again. If it still crashes, report it in Discord (include the error).
Build 42 updates can temporarily break a mod. If something feels cursed, check Discord announcements for temporary disables / fixes.

4) Safehouses & claims

  • Safehouses are ON. BetterSafehouse is active.
  • Default safehouse sizes are listed in the claim form.
  • If you need bigger than 30x30, contact Xripton in Discord.
  1. Choose your base location (avoid overlapping existing claims)
  2. Submit a claim on: Map & Claims
  3. Wait for approval (admins will mark it approved/denied)
  4. Once approved, your area is protected according to server rules
Pro tip: Put a clear location in your claim (“West Point gas station, north room, 2-story brick”) and you get approved faster.
